CAPE TOWN PRIDE CALLS FOR COMMUNITY INVOLVMENT
Organisers of the Cape Town Pride Festival are calling for those that wish to play a part in next year’s event to attend the annual general meeting.
Cape Town’s Gay Pride Festival 2005 was generally considered a success, with its Red Party launch at Sliver at which Miss Gay Pride 2005 was crowned. A highlight of the 2005 festival was the Pink Race Day at Kenilworth Race Course, an interfaith service, and a week full of activities including a pink art exhibition, the Triangle Project community award, a beach party at Clifton, a tour of gay shebeens and a sunset cruise and movie screenings in various areas. The festival culminated in a parade through the streets of Cape Town, followed by a street party in Green Point.
Funds were also raised throughout the process for a new cause; the Pride Shelter Trust. The Trust aims to create a shelter for LGBTs (lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people) in times of crisis, and Pride and its sponsors managed to contribute a substantial amount to the Trust towards setting up the legal body required.
Pride 2006 plans to build on this success, with its goals being to double the contribution to the Trust and to focus on community involvement.
The annual general meeting is being held on Saturday 27 August at 2pm at On Broadway in Shortmarket Street, Cape Town. The organisers are inviting all interested parties to come along and hear their vision for next year.
