Charlize Theron, the South African actress and longtime ally of the LGBTIQ+ community, has come out swinging in support of drag queens, declaring that she’ll “f**ck anybody up” who messes with them.

Theron’s rallying cry was part of a video she recorded for The Drag Isn’t Dangerous campaign, which has already raised over $586,000 for organisations focused on LGBTIQ+ activism and charities fighting against harmful legislation aimed at the community in the USA.

In the video, Theron effused her love for the queens and declared that she’s got their back. “I will f**ck anybody up who’s like trying to f**ck with anything with you guys,” she exclaimed.

“In all seriousness, there’s so many things that are hurting and really killing our kids, and we all know what I’m talking about right now, and it ain’t no drag queen,” she added.

Theron – who is the proud mom to a trans child – also pointed out that drag queens have the power to uplift and inspire. “Because, if you’ve ever seen a drag queen lip sync for her life, it only makes you happier. It only makes you love more. It makes you a better person,” she said.

The Drag Isn’t Dangerous campaign is spearheaded by the LGBTQ management firm Producer Entertainment Group, and was launched in response to over 400 anti-trans and anti-drag bills that have been introduced in several US states.

Some of these bills seek to prevent trans youth from being able to access age-appropriate and best-practice health care. Others aim to limit or ban transgender people from accessing bathrooms consistent with their gender identity or to censor children from learning or reading age-appropriate LGBTIQ-affirming books in schools.

Several bills intend to restrict drag shows in public, especially to those under 18 on the grounds that these performances are “sexually explicit” or intend to “groom” children.

To raise funds for the cause, a five-hour telethon event was held on May 7, backed by Theron and a host of other big names, including comedians Margaret Cho, Leslie Jones, and Amy Schumer, and featuring several RuPaul’s Drag Race contestants like Ginger Minj, Bob the Drag Queen, Jinkx Monsoon, Manila Luzon, and Trixie Mattel.

The event was a huge success, raising over half a million dollars and demonstrating that there’s a lot of love and support out there for the drag community.
