Former President George H.W Bush signs the marriage license

Reflecting the growing acceptance of same-sex marriage in America, former President George H.W. Bush was a witness at a lesbian wedding on the weekend.

Bush and his wife Barbara attended the wedding of friends Bonnie Clement and Helen Thorgalsen, who have been together for 12 years, in Kennebunk, Maine.

The former first couple were both official witnesses in the private ceremony, with Thorgalsen posting a picture on Facebook of the former president witnessing the marriage license.

A spokesman confirmed the news on Wednesday. When George H.W. Bush was in office (1989–1993) same-sex marriage was not the high profile political issue it became in later years.

Bush’s son, George W. Bush who was president from 2001 to 2009, has in the past expressed his opposition to same-sex marriage, although his wife and daughter are in support of marriage equality. He has in recent years, however, refused to say if his views have changed.

In November last year a majority of voters in Maine chose to legalise same-sex marriage in the state, reversing a 2009 referendum that had banned it.

Same-sex marriage is now legal in 13 states in the US: California, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington.
