GAY ACTOR RUPERT EVERETT ATTACKS SAME-SEX PARENTS

Openly-gay British actor Rupert Everett has caused a furore by saying that he believes that children should have a mom and a dad.

“I can’t think of anything worse than being brought up by two gay dads,” Everett (53) told the Sunday Times. He said that his views were shared by his mother Sara (77).

“She thinks children need a father and a mother and I agree with her. Some people might not agree with that. Fine! That’s just my opinion.

“I’m not speaking on behalf of the gay community. In fact, I don’t feel like I’m part of any ‘community’.

The only community I belong to is humanity and we’ve got too many children on the planet, so it’s good not to have more,” said the actor.

Sara was also interviewed by the newspaper and said: “I wish Rupert was straight. I’d like him to have children. He’s so good with children. He’d make a wonderful father. But I also think a child needs a mommy and a daddy.”

In 2000, Everett played a gay man who has a child with a woman, played by Madonna, in the film The Next Best Thing.

The British Media has speculated that his comments are likely to anger Elton John and his husband David Furnish, who are raising a son together.

Ben Summerskill, chief executive of the gay rights group Stonewall, slammed Everett.

“Rupert should get out a little bit more to see the facts for himself, “said Summerskill. “There is absolutely no evidence that the kids of gay parents suffer in the way they are being brought up or in how they develop.”

Everett previously said that the concept of two men having a baby is “egocentric and vain”.

He has also been criticised for advising gay actors to stay in the closet, claiming that his own coming out as gay has damaged his career.
