South African comedian and Mambaonline Sexiest Man 2009 finalist Trevor Noah has responded to criticism over a gay joke that he made on Twitter.

The popular entertainer’s joke, which appears to have been removed, went: “When gay guys are about to have sex, do they shout ‘shotgun’ to see who gives first?”

According to gossip blogger Mika Stefano, the joke immediately drew flack from a number of people and was even slated by 5FM DJ Grant Nash, who commented on Twitter: “Stupid offensive question dude.”

Noah said in a statement to Mambaonline that “with regards to my Twitter post I do not regret saying it, however I do regret not wording it better and I regret that it offended many from the gay community.

“As a comedian I am always attempting to do two things, make people laugh, and strike a chord. My intention is never to hurt individuals or minority groups although sometimes this happens unintentionally.”

He added that, “Many gay men I’ve met have said to me – ‘we are regular guys with a certain sexual preference, that doesn’t mean we should be treated different!’ I guess that doesn’t apply to all because this was what it was, a silly joke meant to poke fun just like all the others.”
