US TORTURE PHOTOS HORROR

A leaked photo of alleged abuse at Abu Ghraib

Photos of apparent torture and rape of detainees at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq by American troops include incidents of both male and female rape.

According to the Telegraph.co.uk, “at least one picture shows an American soldier apparently raping a female prisoner while another is said to show a male translator raping a male detainee.”

Other photographs include further depictions of sexual assault on prisoners with objects including a truncheon, wire and a phosphorescent tube.

Allegations of rape and abuse were included in Major General Antonio Taguba’s inquiry into the Abu Ghraib jail in Iraq in 2004, but the fact that there were photographs was never revealed at the time. He has now confirmed their existence in an interview with the Daily Telegraph.

President Barack Obama has refused to release some 2000 photographs of the abuse due to the graphic nature of many of the images and the implications for American troops.

“These pictures show torture, abuse, rape and every indecency. I am not sure what purpose their release would serve other than a legal one and the consequence would be to imperil our troops, the only protectors of our foreign policy, when we most need them, and British troops who are trying to build security in Afghanistan,” said Taguba in support of the president’s decision.
