Pietermaritzburg’s Gay & Lesbian Network has made an urgent appeal for donations to enable Mr Gay KZN to attend the Mr Gay World pageant. The event takes place from 4 to 8 February in Canada.

Andrew Venter (22) was recently selected as the winner of the KwaZulu Natal title and needs approximately R40, 000 for his flight, meals and pageant related costs. The pageant organisers have agreed to provide him with accommodation.

Venter, who is training to be a hair stylist, lists music, dancing, social interaction, hiking and swimming as his hobbies.

“I am ecstatic to be participating in such a pageant and honoured to be representing the entire African continent,” Venter told Behind The Mask, adding “I will do my best to represent our country but most importantly Africa. I am so thrilled and excited and looking forward to the challenge ahead of me.”

The network has asked for donations to be deposited into its account and deposit slips to be faxed to 086 508 2203 with contact details of the donor.

“We would like to send thank you letters to those who donate as well as a section 18 (A) tax certificate. We have Section 18 (A) status which means that all donations to the Network are tax deductible,” said Anthony Waldhausen, director of the Network.

Waldhausen added that should not enough funds be raised to enable Venter to attend, donations will be returned to the donors.

South Africa will also be represented in the Mr Gay World competition by 36 year old Christian de Jager.
