I WILL SURVIVE’ SINGER HOMOPHOBIC?

Disco diva Gloria Gaynor, singer of the gay anthem I Will Survive, has come under fire for recent ambiguous comments about her gay fanbase.

The 58 year old American singer, who is currently on tour in the UK, was interviewed last week Thursday by Jane Little on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour show.

When Little asked Gaynor, who is a born again Christian, how she felt about being a gay icon, she responded: “I feel good about it because I feel it is a platform for my purpose, which is to bring the love of Christ to all of my fans.”

When Little asked if this meant that she had a “religious opposition to homosexuality,” Gaynor responded again that, “I want to lead them to Christ and what he has for them. I want to lead them to him, I want to lead them to truth.”

Continuing to press the singer on the issue, Little asked, “Do you see homosexuality as something sinful?”

Gaynor once more replied: “I want to lead them to Christ, simply, and whatever he has for them.”

Some fans have reacted with outrage at Gaynor’s perceived homophobia towards her gay fanbase, which is largely credited with giving her career some measure of nostalgic longevity.

Gaynor is best known for her disco hits, I Will Survive (1979), Never Can Say Goodbye (1974), and I Am What I Am (1983).
