MALAYSIA BANS BRÃœNO
Sacha Baron Cohen’s controversial spoof movie Brüno has been banned in Malaysia because of its gay content.
Malaysia’s Film Censorship Board ruled that the film would cause offence in the predominantly Muslim country.
A representative of the board explained: “It’s banned because the story is based on gay life… There are a lot of sex scenes. It’s contrary to our culture.”
Gay sex is illegal in Malaysia with penalties including 20 years in prison.
In July, the Ukraine’s culture ministry also banned Brüno because it said that it includes “artistically unjustified exhibition of sexual organs and sexual relations, homosexual acts in a blatantly graphic form, obscene language, sadism [and] anti-social behaviour which could damage the moral upbringing of our citizens.”
The film follows the journey of a flamboyantly gay Austrian TV host, and features full-frontal nudity, simulated gay sexual acts and offensive language.
