NEW YORK PROTESTS PROPOSITION 8
A demonstration in New York to protest the passing of Proposition 8 – the measure that overturned same-sex marriage rights in California – drew 10,000 people, according to organisers.
Actress Whoopi Goldberg was among the people who held up placards with slogans opposing Proposition 8
Last night’s demonstration was held outside the Manhattan temple of the Mormon Church (the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints).
Activists have slated the Church for its active support for the banning of same-sex marriage in California, including calling on its members to financially support the anti-gay initiative.
According to some reports, up to 75% of the $36 million used to fund the campaign to promote Proposition 8 was funded by members of the Church.
Organisers have announced that a series of national protests in support of marriage equality for gays and lesbians are planned for this Saturday.
Connecticut and Massachusetts are the only two states in the US to offer same-sex couples marriage rights.
